Detroit Lions defensive end Ronnell Lewis after an arrest in Oklahoma

Detroit Lions defensive end Ronnell Lewis was arrested Saturday night during an altercation at a bar in Norman, Oklahoma.

Bouncers at a bar called Logan’s on the Corner requested an officers help. Lewis was involved in a fight inside the bar and was brought outside by bouncers, where he continued to fight in front of police officers. The officer tased Lewis to try to subdue him, but Lewis continued fighting with his opponent, Herve Sivuilu. He was tased a second time, then arrested for public intoxication, disturbing the peace and interference.

One officer said Lewis had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol, and thick and slurred.

Lewis played in eight games for the Lions last season, mainly on special teams, with minimal impact. He was inactive for the final seven games. With starting ends Cliff Avril and Kyle Vanden Bosch, and Willie Young and Lawrence Jackson also in the rotation, Lewis was going to have to earn his way into the rotation through his special teams play.

That didn’t happen last season, as he finished with just two tackles and had zero impact plays in kick and punt coverages. That was considered a strength for Lewis at Oklahoma, and one of the reasons the Lions drafted him in the fourth round last year. The Lions wanted a big hitter that could make something happen.

Amari Spievey was arrested for his involvement in a domestic dispute in late March, but those charges could be dropped if he goes through a family violence program.

The Lions released the following statement:

We are aware of the incident involving Ronnell Lewis. We are in the process of gathering more information and have no further comment at this time.

The Lions are extremely thin at defensive end, with just Jason Jones, Ronnell Lewis, and Willie Young on the roster. It is the opinion of this writer that the Lions are at least one starting and one depth defensive end short. If the Lions do decide to take any disciplinary action towards Ronnell Lewis, it will have an impact on the upcoming NFL draft, which starts this Thursday.

Well, we needed a DE or two anyway. This is Hammer’s first mistake, I doubt it changes much. couple of misdemeanors are embarrassing, but hardly cut worthy.

Am I the only one kind of impressed it took two tazes to brkng him down?
