Starting wide receiver Nate Burleson was on his way home after watching Monday Night Football with friends when he was involved in a one car accident. Michigan State police have stated that there was no alcohol involved in the accident, and that Burleson was trying to keep pizza from falling onto the floor from the passenger seat.
That action caused him to swerve into the center median. He was transported to the hospital by helicopter with a broken arm. The severity of the break and the time that might be missed are not known at this time. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz is expected to address the media at 12:30 from Ford Field.
We do know that just two seasons ago, quarterback Shaun Hill played with a similar injury. It’s safe to say that Hill wasn’t going to be diving to make catches or tackled on a regular basis though. Any speculation on how long Nate is going to be out at this point is just that, speculation.
Burleson is expected to undergo surgery today involving two fractures in his arm.
Burleson had a poor training camp and preseason, and at 32 years old, there were fans that thought he was washed up. Once the season started, it was time to play. Burleson caught six passes for 116 yards, a key factor in the Lions getting their first ever win in Washington Sunday. On the season, he has 19 receptions for 239 yards with an average of 12.6 yards per catch.
The Detroit Lions are going to need Patrick Edwards back on the field soon. He suffered an ankle injury two weeks ago and should be healthy enough to see some playing time. Ryan Broyles has been coming back from a knee injury suffered last season, and saw his first action of the season against the Redskins. Broyles played 17 snaps on offense, but don’t expect him to go a full game yet. The coaching staff is bringing him along slowly.
Kris Durham will probably see an increase in playing time if Edwards can’t play a full load.
The Lions are also actively looking for a receiver in a trade, according to Tim Twentyman of Detroit Lions.com
The #Lions have talked with multiple teams this morning regarding receivers available for possible trade, according to sources.

One name that has been thrown around by both the media and the fans – Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon. The Browns traded away their best player last week, and the media might be right when they say the Browns are looking to accumulate draft picks for next year. Gordon just served a two game suspension for drug use, and it’s possible that the Lions don’t want that potential risk on the roster.
Matt Willis and Lance Long are other real possibilities for the Lions. The Lions need to find someone else that can catch the ball, and soon.
Burleson may or may not be back before the end of the season, but rumor has it that he saved the floorboard from a greasy pizza stain and made the catch, despite the violent collision.
Get well soon Nate.
